Why Do We Need to Partition a Hard Drive?

December 28 2012 , Written by Mark Art

Nowadays, many people are accustomed to use a partitioned hard drive. But does anybody exactly know why we need to partition a new drive?

Why do we need to partition a hard drive?

Actually, every new hard drive is merely like a closet without any drawer or clapboard. It could be time-consuming task to find out your specific coat, pant or other cloth. But if you add some drawers or clapboards in it, it can be completely different. You could put all your clothes in different drawers or compartments according to their categories. Next time, as you need any one of them, you could straightly fetch it in its specific drawer or compartment. Naturally, it also reduces the time.

In fact, the partitioning process is just like the process of adding the drawer or clapboard to your closet. Afterwards, you could easily save your different types of data in separate partitions, and find it out quickly.

To tell the truth, the partitioning a drive is not only a convenient way to mange your drive data, it also has other outstanding advantages:

<1>. Protect your important data and files.

As we all know, the partition C is always used to save our system files including the Windows system. That also makes the partition C much easier to corrupt or crash as it is attacked by some virus or other vicious changes. If our drive has not been partitioned into several ones, all of our important files and data can be crashed or corrupted at the same time. Therefore, we are supposed to store our important data and files in separate partitions, not partition C.

<2>. Mange your drive capacity well

Today, every drive has its considerate capacity. To leave such a big drive with only one partition can be a waste of computer resources. Therefore, if your drive is very large, you should divide it into much more smaller partitions and store different types of files in separate partitions. Usually, 3 or 4 partitions can be good.

<3>. Back up your data much more flexibly.

Actually, having more than one partition on your drive can increase the flexibility of backing up your important data. As a matter of fact, you could back up your several partitions differently according to prosperities. For example, since the partition C is the system partition and has not so much changes to the inner data, you could back up this partition only once or twice a month. However, as to the important data partition and has many changes to the inner data, you’d better back up it daily or at least three times a week.

Therefore, partitioning a hard drive is really necessary.
