How to Recover Data after Rudely Removing a Drive?

December 20 2012 , Written by Mark Art Published on #loat partition recovery, #format recovery, #delete recvery, #raw file systme recovery

I have an Iomega 1TB external hard drive that works completely fine at first. However, yesterday, I straightly removed it for some urgent reason when the Windows gave a message, “Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because a program is still using it.” Afterwards, as I attempted to use in the morning, it was no longer showing in “My Computer”. I could see the green light glow. How could I fix it?

Straightly removing a drive sometimes is harmful to it, especially as one receives “Windows can't stop your device” message. Therefore, in the future, you should often use the "Safely remove hardware" utility. At least, you should wait to extract it till the glowing light is not flashing any longer. That could be a good way to protect both of your drive and data inside it.

However, in your case, you could try two methods to fix your problem.

<1>. Assign a letter to this drive.

Sometimes, the improper operation can make the Windows fail to assign a letter to your inserting drive.

So you can only find your newly plugging drive in “Disk Management”, not “My Computer”. Therefore, you are supposed to add a letter to this drive so that it can work normally.

Assign the letter lie this:

Right click “My Computer” =>Select “Manage”=> Choose “Disk Management” => Right click your drive on the list to select "Change Drive Letter & Paths"=> Click “Add” to choose a letter=> “OK”

<2>. Regain the inner data and format it afterwards.

The improper operation also may cause an amount of weird problems to this drive, such as RAW file system issue, corrupted drive issue, even some bad sectors.

Under these unexpected situations, people usually format the drive to fix it.

Not to erase the important files on the drive at the same time, you should recover them firstly at the aid of a recovery tool.

Actually, there is a free recovery tool, which is widely recommended in many popular forums. It allows one to process the format recovery problem, deletion recovery problem, lost partition problems, RAW recovery problems, etc. It enables the user to mark the critical files to restore for some urgent cases. It permits the user to preview their recovered files for rightly recovery. It is really thoughtful and free.

And then, the formatting thing is really simple: right click your drive in “Disk Management” and select “Format”option.
